Virgin Gorda through the lens of photographer Lotus Carroll

Ray Larson
With such an incredible view everywhere you look, the British Virgin Islands tend to bring out the artist in everyone. But with a special eye for even the smallest details, writer, artist and photographer Lotus Carroll is able to capture the beautiful feeling that the islands evoke. After flipping through her stunning photographs, we caught up with this talented lady to get her take on the islands.

Sunset Watch Villas: How many times have you been to the BVI?

Lotus Carroll: I’ve only been once, but it was so beautiful and peaceful that I look forward to returning eventually.

Sunset Watch: Have you been anywhere other than Virgin Gorda? If so, where?

Carroll: I stopped in St. Thomas on my way to Virgin Gorda, but really only to sleep overnight and then head on. The view I had of my surroundings from the hotel balcony when I woke up was so beautiful, though. St. Thomas is definitely gorgeous.

Sunset Watch: What is your favorite location in the BVI? Both for photographing and just for relaxation.

Carroll: Because my experience is limited, I’ll have to say Virgin Gorda, because it’s where I spent most of my time.

Sunset Watch: What is your favorite subject to photograph? The people, landscape or objects?

Carroll: I like to shoot a little bit of everything no matter where I am, but I am partial to sunrises and sunsets over the water.

Sunset Watch: What is your favorite photograph you have taken in the BVI?

Carroll: That is a very difficult question! I took many and I treasure all of them. If forced to pick just one, it would have to be an image I took of my fellow traveler and friend, Jordana, at Devil’s Bay.

Sunset Watch: If you were to head back to the BVI today, what location would you like to shoot?

Carroll: I’d make sure to shoot Savannah Beach, Gorda Peak, and Devil’s Bay, as well as some more long-exposure work near the abandoned copper mine.

Sunset Watch: A long day of running around can really take it out of you. What is your favorite meal to enjoy on Virgin Gorda to refuel?

Carroll: My favorite place to have a meal on the island is Hog Heaven. I was so happy to eat my delicious meal and sit overlooking the water at night, watching the moon shining overhead and the boats moving around on the water in the distance. It was so lovely.
